| In its quest to promote excellence in management, the Institute launched an autonomous doctoral programme in 1999 leading to the award of Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). However, after the Institute of Management becoming a constituent of Nirma University in 2003, the degree of Ph. D. of Nirma University is granted on completion of the programme.
The primary objective of the programme is to prepare young men and women for challenging opportunities in teaching, research, and consulting. The programme is designed to impart knowledge, develop skills, and create attitudes relevant to teaching, research and consulting. The programme requires coursework in general management as well as in the area of specialization, followed by a doctoral level dissertation. In addition to the Institute faculty, resource persons are also drawn from reputed business schools in India and abroad.
Curriculum
The programme emphasizes both skills and knowledge in management. Some of the skills are generic in nature: self-development, communication, qualitative and quantitative research methods, computing, and information technology. Other skills are more specific to functional areas of management. In a similar vein, a general appreciation of management concepts is provided through the courses at preparatory level, while research based knowledge is imparted through advanced courses offered by the functional areas.
Course Work :
Course work for the doctoral programme will be 60 credits hours. These credit hours will be normally spread over a period of 5 terms, 3 in the first year and 2 in the second year. Students will be expected to complete their courses and the comprehensive examination in the first two years of their admission into the programme. And another two years will be devoted for the completion of the dissertation.

General Management Course Requirement
The doctoral students of the Institute will be required to take courses in various areas of management and business with a view to acquiring an understanding of the managerial decision making process and the inter-linkages among the various dimensions of management. These courses will be drawn from those offered in the existing Master of Business Administration programme (MBA). |

Skill Formation Course Requirement
The doctoral students of the Institute will be required to take various courses designed to develop specific skills in areas such as communication, information technology, research methodology, etc. Some of these courses can be taken from the syllabi of the existing MBA, whereas others will be offered exclusively to the doctoral students of the Institute. |

Advanced Specialized Course Requirement
The doctoral students of the Institute will be required to take courses in the area in which they wish to pursue their research. These courses will be specific to their discipline as recommended by the faculty of the respective areas. Many of the courses will be offered at the NIM campus. During the course of their studies, it is likely that the participants may get an opportunity to associate themselves with management schools abroad including spending 1-2 terms at a collaborating university. A minimum of 60 credit hours* of courses work is required. |
Institute will consider a request for course waiver, if it is satisfied that the participant already has the requisite competence in the concerned course.
Comprehensive Examination
After completing the course work, participants will undergo a comprehensive examination. This examination will cover the general as well as the specialized courses.
Dissertation
After successfully passing the comprehensive examination, the participant will work on his/her dissertation under the guidance of a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC). The chairman of the committee will be drawn from the Institute faculty, who will be the principal guide for the participant's dissertation. The other members of the TAC will be chosen from among the faculty of the Institute and its collaborating institutions. The participant will be required to develop a research proposal under the guidance of the TAC and present a seminar. After the proposal has been accepted, he/she will be allowed to continue to work on the dissertation. The dissertation must make significant and original contribution to the body of knowledge in the subject area. After the dissertation has been written, he/she will be asked to defend it in a public seminar.
Award of the Title :
After the doctoral students of the Institute has satisfied all the requirements of the Ph.D Programme, he/she will be awarded the title of 'Doctor of Philosophy" by the Nirma University. |
